After spending a month in hospital and another month in a rehabilitation centre learning how to walk again I used many different items to help me through my recovery by adding comfort and pain relief to my life. I thought I would share the items that I used and hopefully it will be able to help you with regards to shopping and caring for your loved ones in their times of need. If you have anymore suggestions to add to this list then please feel free to let me know.

If you are like me and you enjoy listening to a bit of music to help with the pain or to sleep or for meditation then Sleep Phones are a great little addition to the sleep routine. It is really soft and comfortable to were especially when you are in bed or on the sofa and lying on your side.

Hot/Cold Packs are not only for keeping your wine cold! They are great for swelling and cooling your feet down which is great for pain management after injuries and medical emergencies. You can’t go wrong with an ice pack if you are dealing with nerve damage and have pushed yourself too far on the road to recovery.

A good quality gentle sponge will really help hospital stays when you are having a sponge bath and is great for traveling. I was introduced to these sponges in hospital and I will never look back. The Konjac Sponge is also gentle enough to use on the face when removing makeup and it helps with blackheads.

When you are sick and your skin is very dry you need a very good moisturising cream that is gentle to restore the moisture back to your skin. I was given this cream by the hospital when my skin was literally falling off my hands and feet. Cetraben is by far the best cream I have used on my skin. I have suffered from dry skin after moving to the UK from South Africa five years ago and I wish I had known about this cream before. My partner who hates using any products even uses this cream. You don’t even have to use a lot of Cetraben to see results and it will last you for ages.

Dry Shampoo is great to have when you are unable to move in hospital. I was unable to wash my hair myself and I was a bit neglected in the hair washing department at the hospital. Luckily my amazing mother-in-law got me some Aussie Dry Shampoo which was great for sprucing up my hair when it started feeling a bit greasy (sorry if too much details).

Skin cleansing foam was a real lifesaver when I was bed ridden for a month. I couldn’t move my legs so I was subjected to bed baths. This skin cleansing foam was a real gem. When ever I needed a freshen up after having a movement or suffering with cold sweats this skin cleansing foam always did the trick. It really leaves your skin feeling clean and fresh, almost as fresh as after taking a shower. It is pH balanced so it is suitable for sensitive skin types.

Intimate Care wipes are a must if you are spending extended amounts of time in hospital. You always want to  feel fresh and clean and it is very important that you feel comfortable at all times. When you have a major illness you can loose all your bodies good nutrients and bacteria so you really need to look after your personal hygiene, but in general you should always be taking care of yourself down there.

Tea Tree and Witch Hazel Body Wipes were great for me when I was in hospital. I could not really move for almost a month in hospital and I spent another month in a rehabilitation centre learning how to walk again so these Tea Tree and Witch Hazel wipes were great for refreshing myself when I was confined to a bed. These particular wipes were also very soothing and cool on my sensitive nerve damaged skin so i highly recommend them for people who have wounds and tender skin.

Lavender Spray was given tot me along with lavender essential oil when I was in hospital and in a tremendous amount of pain. I would spray the lavender onto my pillow and the smell of the lavender would really help to calm me down and have a better nights rest during my recovery. Lavender has become one of my favourite healing aids. I use it for sleep, meditation and to calm my moods. The smell of lavender always puts me at ease and I recommend it to people suffering with pain, insomnia and anxiety. It has really helped me and I would love to hear from others how it has helped them. You can also make your own lavender spray with essential oils.

Essential oils really helped me so much. The power of plants are amazing. There are so many different uses for essential oils. You can use them topically, by ingestion, inhalation and diffusion. The benefits are endless. I use Doterra Essential oils as they are pure and not watered down like a lot of other brands. These oils are so powerful that they are even being used in hospitals and are recognised by Health Canada.

A horrible side effect that can occur after suffering a major illness can be hair loss. I am unfortunate enough to have had this as a side effect after meningitis. After having a lot of your cells destroyed your body need to regenerate itself. So you really need lots of vitamins and nutrients to build your body up again. Lee Stafford’s Hair Growth improves follicle health which in turn increases the ability of the hair to anchor to the scalp. This spray will increase micro-circulation to the scalp and help create the best possible environment for hair to grow. This leave in spray smells really good and also leaves your hair feeling silky soft. I have only started using this spray so hopefully I will start seeing results and then I will post about the results.

Heat Holders thermal socks are not just another pair of socks. After suffering nerve damage from meningitis I was left with so much pain in my feet and legs to the point that they felt like they had been severely burnt. I still have a lot of pain after sicks months and it is taking a long time to heal. These thermal socks have really helped me with coping with the pain. They make is more comfortable when I am sleeping as they prevent the blanket rubbing against my sensitive skin and they have grips so you don’t have to worry about slipping when you are learning to walk again. The material on the inside is very soft which makes the socks very comfortable.

Biofreeze is great for instant pain relief. After the meningitis I was left with severe nerve damage on my legs and arthritis. A friend recommended Biofreeze to me and I am so glad I tried it. It works really well in helping to relive the pain. I purchased the roll on version and it works great and you don’t have to worry about getting your hands messy. Once applied to the skin it gets extremely cold so I recommend that you don’t apply it over your entire body.

Olbas oil is not only a great decongestant, it is also really good for pain relief when applied to stiff muscles and sore joints. Olbas oil is very strong as it contains clove oil, levomenthol and mint oil, so you may want to use it with a carrier oil when applying it to the skin and try not to get it near your eyes. If using it on your neck or back I would recommend that you only apply it before bed when your eyes are going to be closed.

Deep Heat is my all time favourite for pain relief. It is great for muscular and joint pain and it also helps with soothing nerve pain. Be sure not to get it near your eyes as the menthol and eucalyptus are very strong.

My friend Sarah says that you need a laptop during recovery. If you are not good with computers don’t worry, because when you have as much time as I do during your recovery you will have more than enough time to become a genius, I kid you not. I am a big Macbook fan so let me introduce you to a fantastic recovery companion.

These are the symptoms and f septicaemia everybody needs to be aware

I have decided to put some of my favourite essential oils into a body lotion bar. As I am breaking away from plastic bottles and harsh chemicals I decided to make my very own body lotion bar. Now if you aren’t sure what this is, don’t worry because that is what it is. It is basically what the name says, it is a lotion in the form of a bar. Not only does is not have no plastic bottle, it also has no harsh chemicals and I have added some essential oils to give it a good boost. The Rosemary essential oil and lavender essential oil are great for the nervous system, the melaleuca acts as an antiseptic and I have added On Guard which is a blended essential oil that is great for immune support. Now this is really easy to make and I really hope some of you try my recipe out.

For the recipe you will need:

30ml Bees wax

30ml Jojoba or Sweet Almond oil (or a blend of the two)

30ml Shea butter

3 drops Rosemary essential oil

4 drops Melaleuca oil

4drops Lavender essential oil

3 drops On Guard blended essential oil

In a bowl melt the Jojoba or the Sweet Almond oil, Shea butter and Bees wax in the microwave or in a double boiler till melted, then stir and add the essential oils of your choice and place into silicon moulds or a lined container. Set aside until the bar has hardened. If you want to rush the setting time then just place it in the fridge.

Don’t ignore these signs and symptoms

Make sure u know the symptoms. The sooner u get put on antibiotics for meningitis the better the chance u have to survive!

New test can diagnose meningitis ‘within an hour’

A new test which can identify potential cases of meningitis much quicker than currently possible has been developed by scientists.

As it stands, tests for meningococcal disease – which can lead to meningitis and blood poisoning – can take up to 48 hours for results to come back.

But a new diagnosis method developed by experts is able to provide results within an hour.

Dozens of lives might potentially be saved every year, researchers believe, as the test could prevent children with meningococcal disease being wrongly sent home.

Alternatively, it could prevent children being admitted for treatment unnecessarily.

The new test has been assessed for the past two years.

Researchers say the new diagnostic tool, which has been assessed for two years, is as accurate as standard testing methods.

Dr James McKenna, lead researcher, said: “The LAMP test enables doctors to efficiently diagnose meningococcal septicaemia within an hour.

“The LAMP diagnosis could significantly reduce the number of patients taking medication unnecessarily as well as preventing needless anxiety to patients and their families.”

Dr Tom Waterfield, assessing the practicality of testing, said: “We know that scientifically the test is effective but we now need the evidence base to confirm whether it is feasible for clinicians to carry out this test as part of their role before an informed decision can be taken.

“As part of this study, we will evaluate the feasibility of clinicians using the LAMP test in a hospital setting by assessing any potential barriers and ease of use.”

The findings come as health officials have urged students to get vaccinated to protect themselves against meningitis before starting university.

Meningococcal (Men C) My Story

Click Here to donate to my Facebook Page

At the beginning of the year I went through the hardest time of my life. Although my body didn’t die I feel as though a part of my soul did. Yes, that is pretty deep I know. I got meningitis, actual life threatening meningitis. So take some time to read this tale and make yourself aware. This experience actually changed my entire outlook on life and made me realise that there is more to life than what the eyes can see. Your heart, your mind and your spirit are so powerful. They say that when one of your senses goes the others strengthen and I can definitely say that that is very true. All those parts of me strengthened and I now feel I know a lot more about the meaning of life. My spiritual growth has lead me down a new path in my life which is wonderful and exciting. So let me

I have always been a healthy active person as my job requires mental and physical health, I’ve always worked full time as a chef, relentless hours and a lack of family time or a social life, basically married to the kitchen team. I remember going to work and feeling my usual self until I got home. Gradually this pain in my body became more  and more sore. When it got to about 10pm I was suffering from severe pain and a fever. My muscles in my thighs were cramping severely and I had this unbelievable pain in my chest (it felt like I was having a heart attack). At this point there was a flu virus going around town so, of course I thought I had the flu and I would just suffer a few days and it would blow over. So I took some painkillers and went back to sleep. When I woke up in the morning I felt like I had been hit by a ten ton truck. I could not walk as I just kept feeling very faint. So I phoned my boss and told him I wouldn’t be making it to work. I was in so much more pain so I decided to give the GP a ring and made an appointment for that afternoon. By the time I went to see my doctor I was so pale and my partner had to try help me to stand. I had a small red splotch on my foot, the doctor thought I had leukaemia so he told me he wanted to do blood tests first thing in the morning but if I got worse that evening then he wanted me to go to the hospital. As the day went on I kept getting more red marks on my legs and when it got to about 10.30 I told my partner I wanted to go to A and E. We waited for about an hour and about an hour after that I was sent to ICU. I remember being hooked up to a drip and having my blood taken and one of the doctors suspected meningitis so I was put on antibiotics and we hoped for the best. I woke up and my arms and legs were completely covered in this angry purplish red rash. I remained in ICU for five days, hospital for a month and a care centre for another month. I was diagnosed with meningococcal septicaemia (Men C) , a rare bacterial infection. Luckily for me I was left only with scars on my arms and legs. My nerves are still affected. I can’t stand for very long and I suffer from stabbing and burning pains in my feet all the time. It has really made life painful and difficult. I can’t just walk to the shop or do normal things without being in pain. I take so much medication every day and I have to do physiotherapy almost every day.

Recovery is not easy, every day I wake up in pain, but I get out of bed and keep pushing on with my exercising and meditation because I know that my story will make a difference somewhere out there and the next chapter in my life is going to be an incredible journey. I thank the doctors and the Angels  for giving me another chance at life.

My skin prior to being admitted to ICU

Now that you have read some of my story I hope that you will take an interest in researching about meningitis and septicaemia so you know what symptoms to look out for as this is a killer disease that I wish upon no one.  Thanks for taking your time to find out a little more about me and the seriousness of meningitis and meningococcal disease.
