Eggs are not only tasty and cheap, they are also fantastic for balancing hormones. These little guys provide a concentrated source of thyroid-supporting building blocks like protein, cholesterol, B vitamins, fat-soluble vitamins, and minerals. The egg yolks are the most nutritional part of the egg.

  •  Iodine – The thyroid gland requires iodine to create thyroid hormones. Eating 2-3 eggs per day can fullfill 20-30% of your daily iodine requirement.
  • Selenium – both the egg yolk and the white provides an excellent source of selenium. This mineral supports the conversion of thyroid hormone T4 into the useable form of T3.
  • Fat-soluble vitamins – Egg yolks contain all of the fat-soluble vitamins in the egg. These vitamins A, D, E, and K all support thyroid.
  • B Vitamins – B vitamins support blood sugar balance and energy levels. Egg yolks are particularly high in choline, which supports the detox pathways and hormone balance.
  • Cholesterol – Dietary cholesterol from pasture-raised egg yolks only does the body good. Dietary cholesterol supports the synthesis of balanced sex hormones, therefore aiding thyroid.

Unrefined Salt

Unrefined salt such as Maldon or Himalayan rock salt are much more benifial to not only your thyroid but your entire body.

How unrefined salt boosts thyroid:

  • It reduces circulating cortisol and adrenaline. These stress hormones are anti-thyroid so reducing them supports thyroid expression.
  • It supports overall adrenal function. We can’t fix thyroid without helping our adrenal glands… adrenals and thyroid are joined at the hip.
  • It supports the synthesis of adequate stomach acid so we can digest our food and fuel our thyroid
  • It provides a unique profile of trace minerals

Salt your food freely and to taste (if you have kidney disease or hypertension, it is a good idea to consult with a medical practitioner before increasing salt intake.). Always favour unrefined options like  real salt.

Ghee is an ancient medicinal food used in Ayurvedic tradition. It can be used as a primary cooking fat when making curries, sautéing vegetables and many other recipes that call for oil.  Ghee contains the following key ingredients for promoting a healthy Thyroid:

Vitamin A – This nutrient supports healthy levels of thyroid hormones.

Cholesterol – A building block for healthy hormone levels.

Omega-3 fatty acids – Omega-3s have anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation can create a deficiency in thyroid function.

Brazil nuts are the richest dietary source of selenium, which is essential in converting thyroxine to its active form, T3. Sometimes people with Hashimoto’s are advised to avoid selenium. You need selenium for glutathione production to help decrease thyroid antibodies. Snack on three Brazil nuts per day.

Fish is one of the most versatile foods as you can eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner and it contains healthy fats.

Fatty fish such as wild salmon, trout, tuna and sardines contain omega-3 fatty acids, which decrease inflammation, boost immunity and lower the risk of heart disease. Unmanaged hypothyroidism can increase the risk for heart disease as a result of higher levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), the bad cholesterol. Fish is also a good source of the nutrient selenium, which is most concentrated in the thyroid. Selenium also helps decrease inflammation.

Whole Grains

Constipation is a common symptom of hypothyroidism. Whole-grain foods such as cereal, bread, pasta, and rice are high in nutrients in addition to fibre, which can help with bowel regularity. However, fibre can interfere with synthetic thyroid hormones and  some people with hypothyroidism choose to avoid whole-grains altogether, but if you choose to eat them, the recommendation is to take your thyroid medication several hours before or after eating foods rich in dietary fibre.
